Kids Tennis Academy Program Overview

Tennis Coaching Philosophy

Our tennis program focusses on developing the athletic movements required to be a good player before building on this foundation with technical elements. Our tennis classes focus on the development of speed, agility, power and hand eye co-ordination through the use of a variety of fundamental movement based activities. When children have developed this base coaches then introduce the four main shot types.

Our Tennis Coaches

Our fully qualified tennis coaches are specialists in working with young children of all abilities and always ensure that activities are pitched at the appropriate level for the children in the class. For children in the younger age groups this will involve activities using larger sized balls, balloons and static feeds all to promote tasks that are achievable and to build confidence.

Kids Tennis Lesson Structure

Our tennis coaching sessions begin with an active warm up helping children to the agility required to get to the ball in a balanced position on court. The skill acquisition phase of the tennis training session involves the development of the three four types of shorts and lastly children have the chance to implement this in a rally or feeding based challenge involving a competitive element.

The 6 Key Areas Of Children's Tennis Coaching

Footwork

In kids tennis it is essential that children develop good footwork skills in order to get themselves in the right body position to hit the shot and then transfer their weight accordingly. Our footwork drills aim to develop a combination of speed, agility and balance. In these exercises we start with activities without the racquet and then progress to using a racquet when our young tennis players are able to move with their weight on the balls of the feet subconsciously.

Forehand

In children’s tennis coaching the forehand is the shot that children spend the most time working on particularly in younger years. Our tennis coaches focus on developing a good grip before progressing to other elements of technique like swing path and body position. When children can competently demonstrate good technique our coaches will progress to how to get into position to receive deep and short shots on the forehand side and how to hit winners.

Backhand

From our experience as tennis coaches we know that the backhand is typically viewed as a difficult shot in kids tennis. In our tennis academy we make this skill easier by helping children to get comfortable with the body position for hitting on the weaker side and combining this with the appropriate grip and swing path so that this shot becomes a strength for our young tennis players. After children develop technical competence this technique is integrated into game situations.

Volleying

The volleying is an essential attacking shot the should be part of every young tennis player’s arsenal. At Kidster we develop solid technique through the development of a solid continental grip. We use a variety of games and activities that allow children to become comfortable volleying on both the forehand and backhand side of the body. For volleying face angle and control are key and as such our tennis coaches use a variety of drills to develop racquet dexterity and feel.

Serving

Serving is a vital part of the game and something that requires good technique to avoid this aspect of the game becoming a limiting factor later on. After teaching children the fundamentals of a continental grip we focus on the whole body movement required fro servings. After a good technique is established we begin to integrate the serve into a game style situation teaching children about serve placement and strategy to go on the offensive from the start of the point.

Gameplay

At all stages of our tennis program we implement key concepts of game play into the program. For young players this starts by introducing the concept of the court, net and scoring system. Achievable versions of the game such as floor tennis and beachball rallies are used to ensure task achievability. Children progress up to rallies with 30% tennis balls before eventually playing formal games on a full size court either with a coach or with a player of similar ability.
